Disclaimer: You May Find a Broken Link
So, there USED to be freenapster.com, and it USED to provide access to almost any artist's music. It was pretty awesome, and I linked ~90% of this blog's recommendations to that site. Now, apparently, Free Napster is no more. Booooooo.
It will be a long, on-going task of mine to redirect the links to somewhere you can hear the music, but in the meantime, if you click on a link that brings you to Napster where it asks you to sign in:
1) Be angry at them, for disrupting your chance to enjoy a good song
2) Google the song and still check it out, because it's awesome
If you have another source I should be using, please don't hesitate to send it my way. Email me for that, and any music recommendations, at tracy@groundwm.com. Thanks!
12/13/08: Gun, by Emiliana TorriniEmiliana Torrini caught me by surprise. I found her while raiding a friend's "favorite music" section and am impressed by the force of her music. Her voice has enough power and emotion to carry you with her wherever she's going, and she knowingly uses that. Her music paints a basic yet entrancing backbone that allows her voice, with a kind of quiet strength, to completely pull you in as she pilots the mood. “Gun,” the first song on her myspace page, roped me in. The beat makes me feel like a prisoner walking into breakfast on the morning I finally execute my well-crafted escape plan. Mixed with anticipation, fear, and badass-ness, the story she crafts is brutal. Exploring more of her songs I stumbled across “Jungle Drum” and “Hold Heart;” two of the many worthy tracks on her inspiring Me and Armini. Jungle, an up-beat, Johnny Cash styled tune about the crazy energy that engulfs you with a new love, has Torrini scatting heart beats with a ferocity that doesn’t go unnoticed. “Hold Heart” is almost uncomfortably relatable, as she walks you through an internal conversation of motivation, trying to stabilize herself in the presence of a lost love. It’s another example of how Emiliana Torrini’s music seeps in and dictates your pulse, as she unexpectedly takes full reigns of your senses. But trust me, you'll want her to. ##### Tracy :)

My Album Ratings
When I started this blog in November I made a goal to listen to albums. I think I've been too into my iPod lately and needed to get back to hearing albums and bands the way they are intended to be heard - in a full-length, non-shuffle format. I made up a rating system to keep track of them, with ##### being the best. I've decided to share my list to-date for a few reasons: - Hopefully you'll find good music
- Hopefully you'll give me new good music
- Hopefully since I'm sharing such intimacies with you, our bond will grow stronger
First sorted by rating, then chronologically because if you're an analytical freak like me you might enjoy seeing my sequence of discovery.
Enjoy!
Tracy :)

ChicagoIf
Emiliana Torrini wrote lyrics to a
Battles song, it might sound like Circle Mass, by My Gold Mask. With its very driven and large sound, this song will quickly rack up play counts on my iPod, especially because it's FREE
HERE.
Give it a listen, and then (if you're not heading to Subterranean to see
Verona Red) maybe head over to
The Hideout to hear it live on Saturday, January 9.
